Hello! My name is Erica; I am a Registered Psychologist, working with individual adults and couples. Finding the right fit with a psychologist is essential for successful counselling. My hope is the information below helps you to learn more about how I work, who I work with, and who I am. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to email me at erica@claritypsychology.ca.

Approach to Counselling:

Upon meeting you, my most important goal is to build a trusting, safe and supported relationship. I do this through allowing the therapeutic process to unfold at a pace that is comfortable for you, providing gentle encouragement, using humour, asking meaningful questions, and meeting you with authentic empathy and validation. Once we have a shared understanding about why you have come to counselling and what you are hoping to get from the process, we discuss possible treatment options for how best to move forward.

When working with individuals, I most commonly work from a Cognitive-Behavioural orientation. This means that I work with you on how you are thinking and behaviours you are engaging in and explore where modifications might be possible to help you heal and grow. This does not mean that I will simply ask you to “think and act differently.” Instead, we work together to 1) identify problematic, troubling, or distressing beliefs and behaviours, 2) understand the roots and function(s) of frequently occurring problematic beliefs and behaviours, including how these beliefs and behaviours may have been adaptive for you, and 3) work to challenge, soften, correct, and/or reframe the beliefs and behaviours.

For some clients, an Emotionally-Focused orientation is more appropriate than a Cognitive-Behavioural approach. When working from this lens, you and I will explore your experiences with emotional processing and better understand how earlier life and relationship experiences may be influencing challenging emotional reactions and coping behaviours. The goal of Emotionally-Focused Individual Therapy is to help clients have a more coherent sense of self and healthier engagement with others in the outside world.

With couples, I draw from Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy. Here, the goal is to help you and your partner understand your unique patterns of attachment and interaction and facilitate a more bonded and functional way of interacting. I do this through getting to know your history and the history of your partner, highlighting how past experiences may be influencing current patterns of interaction, and facilitating dialogues between you and your partner in a new way to help you better understand each partner’s fears and needs. Because I took a break from this work during the COVID-19 pandemic, I am currently working with an experienced supervisor to enhance the quality of my care for couples. At present, I only see couples in-person.

I am not rigid in my approach and welcome feedback on whether counselling is working for you. I am always happy to adjust how I work with clients to better meet their needs.

Education and Credentials:

  • Registered Psychologist (#4231) with the College of Alberta Psychologists

  • B.A. in Honours Psychology from the University of Waterloo

  • M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta

  • Ph.D. in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta

  • Full member of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta

  • Awarded the 2021 Excellence in Clinical Supervision Award from the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta

  • Awarded the 2019 Peer-Nominated Service Excellence Award from the University of Alberta

Background/Experience:

I have 15 years of experience working with clients and engaging in counselling. I graduated with my doctorate degree (PhD) from the University of Alberta in 2014 - one of only five nationally accredited programs in Canada. My doctoral residency was completed at a university counselling centre, where I subsequently worked upon graduation for nine years.

Since registering as a psychologist, I have completed a number of specialized trainings in various therapeutic approaches, including Prolonged Exposure for PTSD, Exposure & Response Prevention (Ex/RP) for OCD, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Emotionally-Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), as well as trainings in a number of clinical presentations.

Who I Work With: At present, I work with individual adults (ages 18+), as well as couples. I delight in working with adults and couples at various stages of life, including seniors. I have specialized training, experience and/or interest working with the following presenting concerns:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • OCD

  • Phobias

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Life transition challenges

  • Stress management

  • Caregiver stress

  • Infidelity

  • Attachment injury

  • Relationship challenges and break-ups

  • Identity concerns

  • Parenting stress

  • Self-esteem

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Perfectionism

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Boundaries, communication, assertiveness

  • Blended families

I have a deep commitment to learning about and better understanding the lived experience of minortizied and marginalized populations, including immigrants and refugees and LGBTQ2S+, BIPOC, and Indigenous folks, among others. I am always happy to learn alongside my clients and welcome clients presenting with concerns related to their experience of marginalization. However, I also understand that lived experience of a clinician is important when opening up about such concerns and would be happy to connect anyone seeking referrals in this area to psychologists in the community, if they desire.

Unfortunately, psychologists cannot be good at everything! If you would like recommendations for excellent therapists serving children, youth, couples and families, or if you are seeking support for any of the following concerns, I would be happy to provide you referrals to psychologists in our clinic or the community who would be able to serve you very well:

  • Eating disorders

  • Anger management

  • Personality disorders

  • Psychosis

  • Addictions

  • Forensic concerns

  • Chronic pain

About Me:

I hold many identities - I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, auntie, friend, and dog mom, among others. The most important identity I share with my clients, however, is simply being human. I delight in building deep and meaningful relationships with others and sharing in the profoundly messy, complex and rewarding journey that is being human. I believe we all suffer, we are all flawed, and we are all resilient and that through effective support and self-exploration, we have a remarkable capacity for growth and healing.

When I am not working, you can find me with my school-aged son and husband (a high school teacher in Edmonton), walking our dog in the River Valley, spending time with our family and friends, volunteering, or simply playing outside. I love baking, photography, my garden, running, and decorating.

Of note, I have unique lived experience with a sister with severe intellectual disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder and appreciate any opportunity to work with family members who have navigated the highs and lows of similar circumstances.

Welcome! My name is Caitlin Fuller, and I’m a Registered Psychologist with over a decade of mental health counselling experience. I currently offer counselling services for adults and teens (ages 13-17). If you are interested in learning more about my services or have any questions or concerns about the therapeutic process, I invite you to contact me via email at caitlin@claritypsychology.ca. I’m here to be a positive part of your healing and growth journey, and I’m excited about the opportunity to work together.

Approach to Counseling:

My approach to counselling is action-based and focused on helping my clients develop practical strategies to make changes. Rather than solely focusing on what isn’t working in their lives, I aim to provide specific, actionable steps that clients can take to improve their mental health and well-being.

The underlying foundation for my work draws from three types of therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). In session, I typically implement a three-pronged approach. I begin by identifying what drives you, your values, and the life you want for yourself.

Once we have a picture of this, we may implement techniques to identify the narratives you tell yourself about perceived barriers, difficulties, or anything else which may hold you back. Once we have developed this level of insight, we utilize a hands-on, active approach, highlighting our therapy’s proactive aspect, which I admit is my favourite. Here, we develop strategies to regulate emotions, increase assertiveness, and address relationship conflicts through interpersonal effectiveness.

When not in session, you may find me exploring vintage clothing stores, volunteering with local harm reduction agencies, or picnic-ing along the River Valley. I’ve also recently started exploring the hobby of refurbishing old furniture, so you can find me at a local hardware store near you!

Hi! My name is Laurel Miyashita, and I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist working with individual adults. If you have any questions about me or working with a Provisional Psychologist, feel free to email me at laurel@claritypsychology.ca.

Approach to Counseling:

In counselling, I work primarily from a humanistic approach with a belief in every person’s ability to grow and gain strength through insight and discovery. I believe therapy involves working together to explore what matters for someone, and then finding ways to move toward it. This might include the use of strategies from Person-Centred Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, mindfulness, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally-Focused Individual Therapy (EFT), or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

In my way of working, I believe in the importance of taking the time to learn about how situations or circumstances, outside of ourselves, impact a person and their particular stressors and challenges. I understand that similar experiences impact each person differently and it’s important to understand the unique lived experience of each client. I also believe that the ways that people find strength while experiencing suffering, grief, loss and change are different too.

I deeply value being non-judgmental and respectful. Regardless of what specific concerns someone brings to therapy, I strive to create a comfortable space that is trauma-informed and embraces diversity – including being gender inclusive and neuro-affirming. I also know that “fit” is central to a meaningful and successful counselling experience and I welcome all clients to schedule a 15-minute consultation to ensure I am the best fit for you. You are also welcome to email me at laurel@claritypsychology.ca to ask any questions about me or my approach to counselling.

Education and Credentials:

  • Registered Provisional Psychologist (#P7626) with the College of Alberta Psychologists
  • BScN in Nursing from University of Saskatchewan
  • M.C. in Counselling Psychology from Athabasca University

Background/Experience:

I have over 25 years of experience working in healthcare, first as a Registered Nurse and now as a Provisional Psychologist. As a nurse, I always had a special interest in caring for children living with acquired or chronic health conditions and developmental diversities in various stages of illness and wellness. Working with the families of my patients was also an important part of this work. Nursing provided a special space to better understand the unique lived experience of each individual and to appreciate the resilience within humanity.

In my healthcare work, I also saw how professional mental health support had a role in people’s health outcomes. I was grateful for the opportunity to return to university and learn more about supporting the mental health of various populations. Graduate school helped me learn about both the science and the art of counselling. As I value ongoing learning, I have continued to pursue further training/learning in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), providing grief-informed care, chronic pain, and Narrative Therapy since my time in graduate school.

In my life outside of work, I enjoy being outdoors in any season. I like finding new and different ways to connect with friends and family, and to be active and creative. However, it never changes that I enjoy being with my children, a dog walk, reading memoirs, or hobby gardening!

Accessing Care from a Registered Provisional Psychologist:

In Alberta, individuals training to become Registered Psychologists are termed “Registered Provisional Psychologists.” Provisional Psychologists differ from Registered Psychologists in that:

Their work is supervised by a Registered Psychologist. This means that their cases are discussed with their supervisor in full (including the names and personal information of clients), their supervisor has full access to all of their documentation and files, supervisors may view live or recorded sessions, and supervisors hold responsibility for the welfare of the client.

  • My work is currently being supervised by Alisha Sabourin, R.Psych. (AB #5048)

They are working towards the requirements of registration. This means that they are completing a minimum of 1600 hours of supervised practice and 107 hours of supervision, and they are working towards completion of licensing examinations including the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology and the Law & Ethics for Alberta Psychologists Exam.

  • I have successfully completed both of these exams.

I grew up playing a high level of soccer and was fortunate to travel across North America to compete nationally and internationally. As a University Varsity Athlete, I decided to pursue a career in psychology, as I was always fascinated with how powerful the mind can be and how it can impact well-being. When not with clients, I enjoy spending time with my husband and young daughter running/walking in the river valley, cross-country skiing, and exploring cafés, markets, and parks.

  • My work is currently being supervised by Dr. Tracy Muth, R.Psych.

  • I have successfully completed more than 2000 hours of supervised practice and I am working towards completion of the required licensing examinations.
