Background/Experience:

Throughout my training, I have had the opportunity to work with children, adolescents, adults, and families in school, hospital, and community clinic settings.

Prior to graduate school, I worked on several research projects where I gained experience conducting psychological assessments and structured clinical interviews. In graduate school, I have had the opportunity to gain valuable skills and practice working with children, youth, and adults. Through my practicums and residency with the CPS-accredited Edmonton Cross-Specialty Consortium, I have conducted psychoeducational and comprehensive assessments involving attention, mental health, personality, memory, and learning. As well, I gained valuable experience providing individual counselling to children, adolescents, and adults, especially those experiencing anxiety, health anxiety, depressive symptoms, grief and loss, and coping with difficult emotions.

I specialize in research related to growth and resilience, particularly with first responders, police, military members, and veterans, which I integrate into my clinical practice. My current dissertation reviews the resilience and well-being support services for these members, as well as reviewed a workshop that was provided to a unit within the Canadian Armed Forces.

I am passionate about working with children and adolescents, as this has been a major part of my training throughout my Masters and PhD. I am honoured to work with each individual and parent to meet their goals in a collaborative way. I have been lucky to also gain experience working with adults throughout my residency, which also prepares me to work with individuals as they navigate adulthood, aging, illness, and life stress.

In the summer we love to camp and spend our time at our cabin with family. I especially love going for walks, and reading outdoors. In the winter, I enjoy slowing down, still going for walks and runs - I need to keep our dog happy! - and reading cozied up indoors. I look forward to starting my next chapter, wrapping up my PhD, and working with more incredible clients along the way!

I would be happy to answer any questions or inquiries you may have. Please feel free to contact me directly at jamie@claritypsychology.ca

As a child psychologist, my approach is grounded in a strength-based, attachment focused lens. I believe in honouring each child’s innate capabilities and resilience, and I see it as a true privilege to walk alongside children and families in their unique journeys and needs. My approach is gentle, playful, and relational and is centered on building safety, trust, and connection.

I utilize an integrative, play-based therapy approach that views each child as capable where I follow the child’s lead and respond to their unique strengths, needs and ways of expressing themselves. I draw from multiple play-based theoretical orientations, including Adlerian, Gestalt and child-centred play therapy. I also utilize Theraplay to support in strengthening attachment and help children and parents develop a more secure and positive relationship. In addition to my play-based approach, I incorporate evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

For the past four years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a private practice setting, where I’ve deepened my experience in supporting children and families in a clinical environment. Earlier in my career, I worked at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in the Autism Research Centre, where I received specialized training in autism assessments. While I have not recently offered assessments in this area, I plan to complete retraining and anticipate offering autism diagnostic services within the next 6-12 months. About Me:

When I’m not working as a psychologist, my favourite and most important hat to wear is that of mom to my two beautiful boys, who I absolutely adore. They truly are my world. Being their mom has been the most meaningful role in my life; they’ve been my greatest teachers, helping me grow in patience, perspective, and compassion. They’ve shaped not only who I am as a person, but also who I am as a psychologist. As a family, we love being outdoors, whether it’s exploring new trails, hanging out at the river or spending time together at our family cabin. Those quiet, connected moments are the ones I cherish most. Creativity also plays a big role in who I am. Outside of work and family, I am also a photographer and find so much joy in capturing life’s special moments. I also love singing and you’ll often find me belting out Broadway songs in the car, and more likely than not, you’ll likely catch me humming (or singing) at some point in our sessions together. Family, creativity, and connection are at the centre of everything I do and they continue to inspire and ground me every day.

Hi! My name is Laurel Miyashita, and I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist working with individual adults. If you have any questions about me or working with a Provisional Psychologist, feel free to email me at laurel@claritypsychology.ca.

Approach to Counseling:

In counselling, I work primarily from a humanistic approach with a belief in every person’s ability to grow and gain strength through insight and discovery. I believe therapy involves working together to explore what matters for someone, and then finding ways to move toward it. This might include the use of strategies from Person-Centred Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, mindfulness, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally-Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) or EMDR.

In my way of working, I believe in the importance of taking the time to learn about how situations or circumstances, outside of ourselves, impact a person and their particular stressors and challenges. I understand that similar experiences impact each person differently and it’s important to understand the unique lived experience of each client. I also believe that the ways that people find strength while experiencing suffering, grief, loss and change are different too.

I deeply value being non-judgmental and respectful. Regardless of what specific concerns someone brings to therapy, I strive to create a comfortable space that is trauma-informed and embraces diversity – including being gender inclusive and neuro-affirming. I also know that “fit” is central to a meaningful and successful counselling experience and I welcome all clients to schedule a 15-minute consultation to ensure I am the best fit for you. You are also welcome to email me at laurel@claritypsychology.ca to ask any questions about me or my approach to counselling.

Education and Credentials:

  • Registered Provisional Psychologist (#P7626) with the College of Alberta Psychologists
  • BScN in Nursing from University of Saskatchewan
  • M.C. in Counselling Psychology from Athabasca University

Background/Experience:

I have over 25 years of experience working in healthcare, first as a Registered Nurse and now as a Provisional Psychologist. As a nurse, I always had a special interest in caring for children living with acquired or chronic health conditions and developmental diversities in various stages of illness and wellness. Working with the families of my patients was also an important part of this work. Nursing provided a special space to better understand the unique lived experience of each individual and to appreciate the resilience within humanity.

In my healthcare work, I also saw how professional mental health support had a role in people’s health outcomes. I was grateful for the opportunity to return to university and learn more about supporting the mental health of various populations. Graduate school helped me learn about both the science and the art of counselling. As I value ongoing learning, I have continued to pursue further training/learning in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), providing grief-informed care, chronic pain, and Narrative Therapy since my time in graduate school.

About Me:

I have lived in the Edmonton area for the majority of my life, and I am proud to say I love this city! I grew up playing a high level of soccer and was fortunate to travel across North America to compete nationally and internationally. As a University Varsity Athlete, I decided to pursue a career in psychology, as I was always fascinated with how powerful the mind can be and how it can impact well-being. When not with clients, I enjoy spending time with my husband and young daughter running/walking in the river valley, cross-country skiing, and exploring cafés, markets, and parks.

Accessing Care from a Registered Provisional Psychologist:

In Alberta, individuals training to become Registered Psychologists are termed “Registered Provisional Psychologists.” Provisional Psychologists differ from Registered Psychologists in that:

Their work is supervised by a Registered Psychologist. This means that their cases are discussed with their supervisor in full (including the names and personal information of clients), their supervisor has full access to all of their documentation and files, supervisors may view live or recorded sessions, and supervisors hold responsibility for the welfare of the client.

  • My work is currently being supervised by Dr. Carley Hoyle, R.Psych.

They are working towards the requirements of registration. This means that they are completing a minimum of 1600 hours of supervised practice and 107 hours of supervision, and they are working towards completion of licensing examinations including the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology and the Law & Ethics for Alberta Psychologists Exam.

  • I have successfully completed more than 2000 hours of supervised practice and I am working towards completion of the required licensing examinations.

Hello, my name is Sulin. I am a Registered Psychologist in Alberta, practicing individual therapy with adults and mature youth (16years+) on a range of clinical and mental health concerns. I work with people who feel anxious, depressed, who have experienced trauma, loss, abuse, or assault, who are dealing with life transitions, identity development, or who are looking to enhance their mental wellbeing and psychological resilience. My practice is deliberately inclusive of people with a range of identities (e.g., gender, immigrant status, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation). If it works for you, please contact me at sulin@claritypsychology.ca to set up a consultation to consider working together.

Approach to Counselling:

It is important to me to build a practice that is inclusive and respectful to all the ways that we are human. My therapy approach is warm, thoughtful, and collaborative. I create a space where you are invited to be curious and nonjudgmental in how your body and mind responds to stressors that help you survive. I pay attention to what makes you unique and resilient that has helped you come this far, and what needs to happen to help you live your life more in the way that you would like. A lot of my practice involves cultivating an understanding of the brain-body connection, honoring how your body has protected you, and rewiring brain connections through corrective experience, insight, and deliberate practice. The knowledge that “symptoms” “make sense” in the context of our personal stories is at the heart of my view of human functioning and informs how I facilitate healing.

Formally, I am trained in and offer the following therapies: EMDR and Cognitive Processing Therapy [for trauma and PTSD]; CBT and experiential/polyvagal-informed therapies [for depression and anxiety], DBT [for emotional regulation], and Exposure & Response Prevention [for OCD]. More commonly, I integrate these therapies to customize the work to your needs. I work collaboratively with you and will revisit our plan at selected time-points to ensure that the therapy approach and goals are still working for you.

Background/Experience:

I have a master’s degree in counselling psychology (from 2010) and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology (from 2019). I have been in this field for over 14 years. I have worked in public health for close to 10 years; I started my career as a psychologist in Singapore. Most recently, I practiced in a psychiatric unit at a hospital in Edmonton. In addition, I have experiences in private practice and community health in Vancouver, where I obtained my doctoral degree, and my doctoral residency was completed at a university counselling clinic in Edmonton. My postdoctoral training and certifications have specialized in trauma assessment and treatment.

My doctoral research and publications have been focused on LGBTQIA+ mental health. My interests are particularly in using research methods that empower and give voice to folks with intersecting minority identities in the context of race/ethnicity, migrant status, gender, and sexual orientation to illuminate the vulnerabilities and resiliencies associated with marginalization.

  • Registered Psychologist (#5369) with the College of Alberta Psychologists

About Me:

I am privileged to have lived in various countries up to this point in my life, including Singapore, New Zealand, USA, and Canada. These experiences have helped me to appreciate first-hand the diverse ways that we are human. Each place that I have settled in or visited has provided me with an education in the ways that people are different, yet similar. I have lived experience as a visible and invisible minority, and I also have much privilege in my life. I work hard to recognize my blind spots and am committed to allyship in establishing a safer and socially just world.

I like discovering new sights, smells, tastes, and sounds. I enjoy food, both the old and familiar, as well as the new and “funky”. I am lucky to have a partner who enjoys pursuing new experiences as much as I do, perhaps even more so. Together, we frequently enjoy our culinary adventures as well as our physical-spiritual “expeditions” on the hiking trails around Edmonton and the mountains.
